Jose and Alice de Sousa opened Casa Iberica in 1975. Their aspiration was to create a quaint, small corner specialty store that had the ambiance, smell and taste of the land they left behind. The small island of Madeira, Portugal. The initial container of whole frozen Portuguese Sardines started in 1980. By 1988 we had out grown the “small corner store” and moved to our current site in Yarraville. This step forward allowed the De Sousa family to increase the variety of products sold. At this early stage as continues today, Casa Iberica imports its products directly from the manufactures. These include our Paprika, Paella Pans, Terracotta Cookware, Spices, Olive Oils, Biscuits, Dry Salted Cod and an endless variety of seafood.
From that very first container we now have the capacity to hold 6000 pallets of Frozen Seafood. We have Australian Prawns, Octopus, Squid and Salmon. We have imported Scallops, Cooked Prawns together with a large variety of both whole fish and fish fillets.
Today, Jose and Alice together with their two daughters are based full time out of Yarraville. Although the site is big, the “old quaint corner store” mentality still exists.
